Samsung’s $539 Million Tip to Samsung

Samsung Phones

There are a lot of people out there that have smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy. Whether they are an Android or an iOS user, people everywhere enjoy the benefits of having a mini-computer. The smartphone has been the mobile device of the last ten years. Allowing its owner to text, surf the web, and FaceTime with friends. And fight lyme disease with an app.

In 2011, Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung saying that they had copied features from them for their smartphones. They have settled for $500 million. They definitely wish that they did a background check before all of this.

Their Payment to Apple

Apple is one of the most profitable companies in the world. They will be the first to tell you that it’s about more than the money. They are pioneers of the smartphone, so it makes sense that they would want to go after a company that copied them.

What this lawsuit is really about is image. Now Apple is able to legally say “hey, you copied us” to them. People with a Galaxy may not switch to Apple over this, but I doubt they are happy to hear this.

Effects in the Global Market

Now that Apple won half a billion dollars from Samsung, they’ll be able to use that money however they want (once the legal fees are paid off from the seven-year court case). Other effects in the global market will probably include their stock. After paying their biggest competitor such a large sum of money, most would be surprised if the stock of Samsung didn’t take somewhat of a hit after this.

Will It Recover?

One thing that many people are wondering after all of this has taken place is whether or not they are going to be able to recover from this whole thing. Competing with Apple was hard enough, but the cost in both dollars and public image could prove too much to bear for the South Korean company. Time will tell if Samsung is able to fully recover from losing this court case with Apple.

While this case shouldn’t affect the average Galaxy owner, it does do a lot to the public images of both Samsung and Apple. This was a major win for Apple, who now has the legal documents to prove that the iPhone is definitely king when it comes to the smartphone market.
